SMITHFIELD RIVERSIDE REMEMBERED

The Riverside area on Smithfield Road has played a significant role in Shrewsbury’s history, evolving to meet the changing needs of the community. From 1850 to 1959, the site was home to a bustling livestock market, which was later replaced by the Riverside Centre, a mixed-use retail, leisure and office complex.

Today, the site is undergoing redevelopment to better serve future generations of Shropshire residents. The Shrewsbury Big Town Plan Partnership recognises the importance of preserving memories of the Riverside Centre, celebrating our shared heritage and enriching the historical record of Shrewsbury.

The Riverside Remembered social history project aims to collect personal stories and archival materials, culminating in an exhibition at Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery in January 2027.

There are several ways to get involved:

  • Share your memories, photos, or videos of the Riverside Centre by clicking on the Riverside Remembered Portal below.

  • Join a group reminiscence session in Spring 2026, each focused on a theme such as live music or shopping. Choose a session that resonates with your experiences and connect with others who share similar memories. Dates, venues, and themes will be announced soon.

  • Volunteer to conduct research at Shropshire Archives, no experience of the Riverside Centre required.  Please email riversideremembered@shropshire.gov.uk if you would like to volunteer.
